Kagen Statement On Anniversary of September 11 Attacks

September 11, 2010 

APPLETON, W.I.- Congressman Steve Kagen, M.D, issued the following statement in commemoration of September 11, 2001: 

"On this day we pause to remember all those who have served with courage, honor and incredible skill; all families everywhere, whose daily sacrifice is seen in an empty room or an empty bed; all public servants, police and fire fighters, who protect us every night and every day; and all those who dedicate themselves everyday to the memories of our brave soldiers who gave their lives serving our villages, towns and cities everywhere across Wisconsin and America, the greatest nation on Earth. 

On this day, let us also remember to pray to the Almighty, asking for forgiveness and for the strength to carry on, having learned the two most important lessons of war: the more you fight your enemy, the more like your enemy you become, and making war is our worst human failure. 

Make no mistake, we are still engaged in a worldwide battle with violent extremists who seek to do us harm, a battle that we know can not be won using military might alone. 

On this day, September 11, 2010, let us begin to think things all the way through and to then believe that conversations – not confrontations – can solve even the greatest differences between people and between nations. 

Let’s join hands and work hard at listening to one another – not in anger, but rather in attentive appreciation for the other person’s point of view. 

By working together, and remaining vigilant, I am both confident and certain we will build a better nation and a better world for all of us."
